Oaxaca Airport: A Comprehensive Guide for Travelers

When Josh and I first arrived in Oaxaca, we were instantly drawn in by the city’s vibrant culture, delicious food, and warm, welcoming people. Navigating through Oaxaca Airport was part of the adventure – it’s a small airport with just one terminal and three gates: A-1, A-2, and A-3.

When you land, you’ll deboard the plane on foot instead of using the ‘usual’ Passenger Boarding Bridge, which adds a fun twist to your arrival. The airport’s small size makes it incredibly easy to grab your luggage and be on your way.

Whether you’re flying in for a short stay or a couple of months, this guide will help you make the most of your time at the airport and beyond.

Oaxaca Airport Amenities

Dining and Shopping

Oaxaca Airport may be small, but it still offers a few dining and shopping options.

You can enjoy a meal at Recuerdame, a full-service restaurant outside the security checkpoint, or grab a quick snack like premade sandwiches at Snack Bar Café y Cacao inside the terminal.

If you need to pick up some essentials or last-minute gifts, Delicatessen Calenda have you covered. I always find a good selection of local crafts – perfect for a quick gift or a treat for myself. On my last trip, I picked up some packages of mole, chocolate bars, and mezcal.

Lounges and Waiting Areas

The airport offers comfortable lounges and waiting areas. Whether you need to catch up on work or just relax before your flight, you’ll find a spot to settle in.

Wi-Fi and Other Services

Stay connected with free Wi-Fi throughout the airport. Plus, there are other essential services like ATMs, currency exchange, Car services, and information desks to assist you.

Several airlines operate flights to and from Oaxaca Airport including Aeroméxico, American Airlines, TAG Airlines, United Airlines, Volaris, and VivaAerobus.

You’ll find connections to major cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Las Angeles, and Tijuana. I always appreciate the frequent flights, making it easy to plan my travel without stress.

There are a few different ways to get there from the Oaxaca Airport as you can see from the list below. I’ll be breaking down each one in more detail so you can pick the option that suits your budget and your group.

  • Rent a car from Oaxaca Airport
  • Take a Didi Rider (Oaxca’s taxi service)
  • Take a Private or Shared Shuttle
  • Take the Public bus

Option 1. Taxi Services

Travel Time: 20 minutes | Estimated Price: $250 MXN

Download the DiDi Rider app on your phone. This is the taxi service in Oaxaca.

Taxis are a popular choice and are readily available outside the terminal. A ride from the airport to downtown Oaxaca typically costs around $200-300 MXN. It’s a quick and convenient way to get to your destination.

Option 2. Private and Shared Shuttle

Travel Time: 20-30 minutes | Estimated Price: $250-840 MXN  |  Check Rates/Availability

Private and shared shuttles offer a hassle-free way to travel from Oaxaca Airport to your accommodation. When you book an airport shuttle, you’ll be greeted by an English-speaking driver who will assist you with your luggage and escort you to a modern, well-equipped vehicle, allowing you to relax after your flight.

Booking a private airport transfer ensures your trip will be pleasant and practical. The journey lasts about 30 minutes, and your driver will take you directly to your hotel in Oaxaca City.

Private Shuttles

  • Passengers: 1-9
  • Rate: $49.20 USD (one-way)

Shared Shuttles

  • Passengers: 1
  • Rate: $12.50 USD (one-way)

Private shuttles are ideal for groups of up to 9 passengers, making it a cost-effective option when the expense is shared among the group. This option provides both convenience and comfort for your travel needs.

Option 3. Car Rentals

Discover Cars | Check Rates/Availability

If you prefer the freedom of the open road, renting a car at Oaxaca Airport is a great option. Brands like Europcar and Hertz offer a range of vehicles to choose from.

Once you land, you can rent a car directly at the airport, choosing from various affordable vehicles. For the best deals, I strongly recommend booking your car in advance!

Driving your own car allows you to explore Oaxaca at your own pace, whether you’re visiting Monte Alban, heading to the beautiful beaches of Puerto Escondido, or taking day trips to other local destinations.

Renting a car from Oaxaca Airport is the best choice if you’re eager to embark on an adventure and fully explore all that Oaxaca has to offer!

Option 4. Public Bus Transportation

Travel Time: 20-30 minutes | Estimated Price: $8 MXN (less than $1 USD)

If you’re on a budget, public bus transportation is the cheapest way to travel from Oaxaca Airport to Oaxaca City. Buses depart every 10 to 15 minutes and can take you to various parts of the city.

To catch a bus, you’ll need to walk about 10 minutes outside the airport to Highway 175, where the buses stop. One ticket costs just 8 MXN, making it an incredibly affordable option.

You can pay for your ticket directly on the bus with cash, so be sure to have some change on hand. The journey to the city center takes around 30 minutes, and the bus will drop you off at Bustamante and Francisco Javier Mina Street, just a 5-minute walk from Oaxaca City Center.

This is an efficient and convenient option to get from Oaxaca Airport to the city, especially if you’re looking to save money!

Tips for Travelers

Best Times to Travel

Oaxaca is beautiful year-round, but the best times to visit are during the dry season from October to April. You’ll enjoy pleasant weather and vibrant local festivals. I highly recommend coming during Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in late October and early November.

This famous celebration is a profound cultural experience, with colorful parades, intricate altars, and festivities that honor the deceased in a uniquely joyful way. Visiting during this period allows you to immerse yourself in one of Oaxaca’s most important and beautiful traditions.
